Horses evolved in North America, over approximately 57 million years, and are a reintroduced native wildlife species (Equus caballus). Columbus first introduced horses to the Virgin Islands on his second voyage in 1493 and in subsequent voyages thereafter, at the request of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Breeding farms were developed on several islands in the Caribbean, from which Colonial Spanish horses were taken into Mexico and, eventually, onto the American Great Plains by Spanish Conquistadors… with further northern radiation via escape and pilfering. Native American tribes developed a horse culture that completely altered their way of life. If we read enough valid scientific literature, and understand well, we will see that horses are not misplaced "weeds" but intrinsic to our North American landscape and spirit, not just as a wildlife species but as a historical treasure that deserves far better than the disdain of those who fail to grasp their significance and right to be... not just for a utilitarian purpose, that we humans invent, but for themselves alone. Wild horses that are rounded up from federal rangelands (BLM and U.S. Forest Service lands) are not being euthanized nor are they being (legally) sent to slaughter. They are either adopted or are in both long- and short-term federal or private contract holding. A fair and viable solution to this conundrum is pending.
