Cigar was foaled in 1990. He was the son of Palace Music who progeny normally excel on turf. His record on turf was nothing special and he was switched to the dirt in October 1994.

Cigar ran his streak to twelve in a row after winning the 1995 Classic.
The streak ended in the 1996 Pacific Classic at Del Mar when he was ran second to Dare and Go.
Cigar was owned by aviation magnate Allen Paulson and trained by Bill Mott.
Jerry Bailey was aboard Cigar from the beginning of his amazing streak all the way through the end of his career.
His final race was in the 1996 Breeder's Cup Classic when he finished third to Alphabet Soup.
Cigar was never able to sire any offspring due to infertility.
