1988 Video of Personal Ensign Winning the Breeder's Cup Distaff
Tom Durkin called the 1988 Breeder's Cup Distaff for NBC.
Personal Ensign was a perfect twelve for twelve in her racing career when it appeared the streak would end in her final race.
Somehow, she managed to pulled out a dramatic victory over Kentucky Derby winner (and pacesetter) Winning Colors on a very muddy track at Churchill Downs.
A real test of a champion is when you win when you are not at your best and that is what Personal Ensign did on that day in Louisville.
Personal Ensign went on to a most successful career as a broodmare. Her daughter, My Flag, was the only Breeder's Cup winner produced by a female Breeder's cup winner. That is, until My Flag's daughter, Storm Flag Flying won the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies race in 2002.
It was a three mare/three generation feat that may not be duplicated again.
Personal Ensign was likely one of the most valuable mares in thoroughbred racing history.
