Barbaro had not raced in five weeks prior to the 2006 Kentucky Derby which was an usually long layoff. He last raced in the Florida Derby.
He went into the race undefeated and remained that way, becoming only the sixth undefeated Kentucky Derby winner.
Jockey Edgar Prado never went to the whip in the race.
He was sent off at 6-1, which was second choice in the wagering.
Barbaro was owned by Lael Stable (Gretchen and Roy Jackson). He was trained by Michael Matz.
